Advanced AI-Driven Pneumonia Diagnosis for Rural India

about-thumb
Addressing the Challenge

The Current Scenario : Rural India faces significant challenges in accessing quality medical diagnosis. The shortage of medical professionals, particularly specialized doctors, leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment. According to the World Health Organization, the recommended ratio is one radiologist per 100,000 people, but India has only about 10,000 radiologists for its 1.3 billion population. Moreover, around 75% of doctors practice in urban areas, serving just 28% of the population, leaving rural areas underserved.

Internet Connectivity in Rural India

The situation is gradually improving with increased internet connectivity. By mid-2023, over 180,000 gram panchayats were connected under the BharatNet project, aiming for 100% internet availability in rural areas by 2028.

Pneumonia Burden

Pneumonia remains a major health concern in India, affecting millions annually. The Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 reported around 4.8 million cases of lower respiratory infections, with pneumonia being a significant contributor. Severe pneumonia particularly impacts children under five, with an estimated 3.6 million severe cases leading to high mortality rates.

Our Solution: DigiDx qCX

We present DigiDx qCX, a cutting-edge Explainable AI system for the differential diagnosis of pneumonia (Bacterial, Viral, and Fungal) from chest X-ray images (CXR). Our AI algorithm not only provides accurate diagnoses but also explains the factors influencing its predictions, facilitating quicker therapeutic decision-making.

How It Works

Cloud-Based Radiology Image Management System (IMS)

  • Technicians can upload radiology images from any rural hospital or primary care center to our cloud-based IMS.

Explainable AI algorithms

  • Using a dataset from Radiance Teleradiology, our AI team develops a differential diagnosis algorithm with gamified additive explanations tailored to the data.

Concordance Study

  • A study comparing the sensitivity and specificity of our algorithm against radiologist reviews ensures accuracy.

Validation and Deployment

  • Initial deployment on our platform for optimization and validation.
  • Subsequent deployment in rural hospitals and scanning centers for workflow validation.
  • Once achieving over 90% sensitivity and specificity, large-scale deployment follows.
